It was not a rosy journey to fame but for Saito University College Lee Chen Yi, Nov 18 was a day to remember. Although the gold medal slipped off his hands, Lee managed to thwart off his opponents and walked away with a bronze medal in the Asian Sport Jiu Jitsu Federation (ASJJF) in Kuala Lumpur.
The 21-year old who is pursuing a degree in Law Enforcement at the Saito Law Enforcement & Public Sector Management (FLAME) was elated when contacted, saying it was a tough championship but securing the Top 3 was a feat.
Lee who is fondly known as Hugo among friends and lecturers travelled regularly to his hometown in Malacca over the weekends to train there. Apart from that, he also trained rigorously with housemates at his Cheras dormitory during their free time.
Son of civil servant parents, Lee initially took up judo early 2022 after trying out boxing, Muay-Thai and Jiu Jitsu. In fact, he is a well-known figure among the self-defence fraternity.
“I travel to my hometown regularly and spend my time at the Malacca training centre during weekends.
“On Sundays, I will return to my dormitory in Cheras to prepare for my classes during weekdays,” he said.
Lee who aspires to be a law enforcement officer had won the gold medal in the Penang Judo championship last year.
His appetite for more success is glaring, Lee aims to take part in future championships in the various defence regimes and of course, win more medals, to make Saito UC proud.
“I love studying here as the time is flexible, I can indulge in my sports interest and at the same time, study hard to excel in my studies,” he ended the conversation.
Good luck and all the best from all of us! You can do it!
